Request an Assessment

We assess the safety of work through physical and remote assessments (inspections), and through predictive algorithms that support the decision making of our safety officers. Together, these methods allow us to target the areas of highest risk to the public, while maximizing efficiency and effort.

We conduct assessments to confirm that owners are complying with Regulations and the Safety Standards Act. Permit-holding contractors will often perform similar inspections, and our safety officers step in when their expertise is needed.

We conduct both insights-based and discretionary assessments. Assessments prioritize the areas with the highest probability of hazard risks.

We refer to a person who owns regulated products or performs regulated work as a duty holder. The duty holder has a responsibility to comply with the Safety Standards Act, regulations, and any applicable technical code associated with the products they own, or work they perform. After our safety officers assess the work of a duty holder, they provide one of the following outcomes.

PassThe safety officer has assessed that the regulated work and/or regulated product was found to comply with the Safety Standards Act, regulations, and/or applicable technical code(s).
Conditional PassThe safety officer has assessed that the regulated work and/or regulated product was found to not comply with the Safety Standards Act, regulations, and/or applicable technical code(s). Outstanding non-compliances must be corrected and declared by the assigned due date(s).
FailThe safety officer has assessed that the regulated work and/or regulated product was found to not comply with the Safety Standards Act, regulations, and/or applicable technical code(s). Further regulated work on the affected system or phase of work, and/or operation of the regulated equipment must not be undertaken until the identified non-compliances have been corrected.

Note that the assessment outcome of “conditional pass” does not apply to the electrical; gas; and boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration technologies.  The assessment outcome of “conditional pass” only applies to the passenger ropeways, elevating, and amusement devices technologies.
