Directive: Requirements for gas appliances in bedroom

This Directive is being issued by a provincial safety manager pursuant to section 30 of the Safety Standards Act.

General details 

This Directive is being issued to clarify the application of automatic temperature control requirements for gas appliances installed in bedrooms where the appliance can be controlled remotely. 

Specific details

The schedule “Variations for B.C. Natural Gas and Propane Code to the National Code” of the Gas Safety Regulation details additional requirements to the adopted codes for temperature controls for gas appliances installed in bedrooms; specifically:

The following clauses are added after Clause 7.25.5 of CSA-B149.1 

7.25. A.3 A gas appliance installed in a bedroom shall meet all of the following requirements: 

(a) the appliance must be of the automatic temperature controlled type;

(b) the appliance must be equipped with a pressure regulator;

(c) the appliance must have a 100% safety shut-off control valve;

(d) the appliance must be vented and meet the requirements for combustion air specified by section 7. 

7.25. A.3 (a) requires that the appliance have an automatic temperature control to limit the maximum temperature in a bedroom. When the automatic temperature control is a hand held remote control which can be removed from the room, the related installed appliance cannot detect the associated temperature of the bedroom, therefore the hand held remote control must be equipped with a limit that shuts off the appliance, if the remote handset exceeds a distance from the appliance that is more than the longest dimension of the room.
